It is no accident that the GLK350, the smallest and least expensive Mercedes SUV, jumped into the crowded market compact crossover last year as a direct competitor desirable. After all, Mercedes-Benz pioneered the combined utility of the beauty of SUVs and luxury cars with the ML-Class SUVs in the 1990s. About five years ago, Mercedes showed it can make a full-size luxury SUV that is very good as well as the GL-Class. The company still lacks an entry for the growing crossover segment is small, however. So last year, the GLK350 comes along to fill the gap.
Drawing from Mercedes 'stores a complete component, 2011 Mercedes-Benz GLK, based on the C-Class sedan and features Mercedes' familiar 3.5-liter V6 and seven-speed automatic transmission. And despite the fact that one of the cheapest Benz models, GLK is built for such high demand that the price is higher than most comparably equipped competitors seem worthwhile. Go to the rails and body flex a little, or shake each to have you back. This small SUV feel like you can drive over a mine, and experience nothing but muffled "thump". GLK350 may not be perfect, but when it comes to build quality very carefully, it simply has no equal in this segment.
The interior is an old chip from C-Class to block - and we do mean block. The controls are almost identical, but they are placed in an upright dash with nary a curved surface visible. When done in black, the interior of the GLK is a harsh environment that most Germanic stereotype of a beer garden brief Stuttgart. What can a lack of talent, though, the GLK interior more than compensates with superior materials and excellent fit and finish.
